Tobacco curing, c.1900. It doesn't grow here like it used to. Neither do the stories. But both leave a stain.

The fields remember more than the farmers.

A stain that outlives the thing that made it — in ceramics we call that a memory of the fire. I was glazing cups when I read this. Frost, fire, and tobacco all transform what they touch and refuse to be fully removed.
